Abel Prize- The Most Prestigious Award In Mathematics_33491

The mathematician抯 Nobel

The Abel Prize, considered to be the most prestigious award in the sphere of mathematical researches, is presented by the Norwegian government. It was named after an outstanding Norwegian mathematician Niels Abel who proved that solving the quintic equation in radicals is impossible. The nomination is relatively young; it was awarded in 2003 for the first time. Still, it is recognized by the world抯 community and is even called the mathematician抯 Nobel.

There are certain differences between the Nobel and the Abel Prizes. The first of them is the domain to which the scientific workers are expected to contribute. Another discrepancy is the fixed amount of the Abel Prize (approximately USD 1 million at the present moment). One or more mathematicians are awarded for their significant contributions to mathematical knowledge as well as to the related spheres such as computer science, statistical and numerical analysis and others. The prize can be shared by a group of researchers or awarded to a single scientist.

The significance of the Abel Prize

1. Establishment of the Abel Prize is expected to enhance the visibility of the latest achievements in the sphere of Mathematics. The creation of 6he award by the Norwegian government is an important event in life of mathematicians?community worldwide.

2. The Abel Committee consists of five international members and it will increase the significance of the prize. The International Mathematical Union collaborates with the committee proposing the outstanding scientists who could become laureates. The prize is expected to raise the status of mathematics.

3. The Abel Prize may be used for motivating young people choosing Mathematics as their future career. Lecturers might start their speeches from assuring their students that they might become laureates of the award in several decades and encourage them for making progress and improving their learning achievements.
